Architectural Examples

Centre Georges Pompidou

The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris which was designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers to be in the style of High-tech architecture. The Pompidou was designed as a social meeting area where activities were to be held and public performances could be displayed and watched.

All along the exterior and interior of the building run the functional structural elements of the building such as support beams, and duct work which are all colour-coded. Green pipes are plumbing; blue ducts are for climate control; electrical wires are encased in yellow; and circulation elements and devices for safety are red.

Burj Dubai

The Burj Dubai, desgined by the architect Adrian Smith, is a skyscraper which is currently under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As of January 2009, standing at 818m high, even before completion, it is already the tallest man-made structure ever built. Construction began on 21 September 2004, and the tower is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.

The design of Burj Dubai's triple-lobed footprint of the building is based on an abstracted version of the flower Hymenocallis. The tower is composed of three elements arranged around a central core. As the tower rises from the flat desert base, setbacks occur at each element in an upward spiralling pattern, decreasing the cross section of the tower as it reaches toward the sky.
